Develop The ‘Action Habit’

I find happiness in making the most of the skills and the talents I have, and giving myself permission to dream big while appreciating everything that I already have. Action brings your body and mind into the present moment. This awareness of what you are doing right now allows your thoughts to be focused, rather than scattered and constantly flirting between something in the future or the past, and all the things you’re not doing. The ‘action habit’ is the most powerful tool I’ve discovered to allow me to step through my fears and take on the type of projects I might never have ‘thought’ feasible. Action simply make so much more possible.

We tend to believe that we must be highly motivated before we can do or start anything. But psychologically we actually become motivated by the doing, rather than the other way around. You are far more likely to feel motivated to run after you start running than before.

When you wake up, going for a run might be the last thing you want to do, but if you create the right conditions then you’ll be out of the door before you know it. There have been so many times that my good intentions of early morning exercise have come to nothing. I’ve woken up, checked my emails and before I know it, two hours have gone by. So now I lay out my running clothes the night before, that way I can just get up, put them on and go before anything gets a chance to distract me. Simple, but it gets results.

All of the productivity tools in this section will help you stop putting off what’ s important and get into a habit of action. When I work with clients, they often want me to just tell them how to do more, without first pruning and filtering so that they can concentrate on what actually matters and gets results. When you have an understanding of how you want your life to be, these are the tools that will help you there quicker.

Ask yourself two essential questions : What is the most important thing that needs to be done today ? What actions can I take or stop taking to give me the time and space to do it ?
